This waterproofing system has been used successfully for decades. The membrane is simply attached to the substrate with suitable fasteners. Where the wind vacuum is higher, at the corners and at the edges of the roof, the fasteners should be placed denser than in the middle of the roof where the vacuum is lower. A flat roof with gravel consists of the following layers:

• AB slab in the fall
• waterproofing
• non-absorbent thermal insulation of appropriate thickness
• geotextile
• gravel.

The roof as a terrace does not differ significantly from the roof with gravel, the only difference is in the final layer.

Rain, wind, UV radiation, and temperature oscillations directly affect the roof of the building. For this reason, the layers of the roof must be made following the physics of the building to protect the interior of the building from all negative influences.

The most important layer of the roof is the waterproofing, which must be extremely mechanically resistant as well as UV and thermally stable. In order to install the membrane, the roof base should have adequate strength and the distance between the superstructure, at the joints of the roof and wall, pipe penetration and ventilation, etc., should be at least 0.5 m to allow enough space for safe welding of details. Prior to the installation of the membrane, drains and penetrations should be installed on the roof. Dilatations need to be defined. In order to enable even and continuous welding of the edges of the membrane, all differences in the height of the substrate should be leveled.

Before starting work, the substrate should be dry, clean and free of ice or snow. Debris, sharp objects, etc. they must be removed by careful sweeping or vacuuming before installing the membrane.

In addition to atmospheric moisture, thermal insulation must also be protected from the moisture from the building.

• By installing a bitumen membrane reinforced with glass fibers like DRACO BIT 305, the penetration of steam is prevented, while the thermal insulation retains its properties,
• The TPO membrane must be, also, protected with DRACO PLAN 435 geotextile,
• In addition to the protective layer, geotextile is also used as a backing layer, under the TPO membrane, if the membrane is installed on a layer of falling concrete.

As the roof is a surface on which water collects and then drains in a directed manner, there is a possibility of water retention during heavy rainfall. To prevent the height of standing water through the attics (parapets) from entering the building, the TPO membrane is performed with elevation to the attics (parapets) and upgraded elements.

At its ends, the membrane is welded to the installed DRACO PLAN 320 sheets. The sheet metal and substrate contact is additionally sealed with DRACO FLEX 525 polyurethane putty for safety reasons.

The main difference between a classic and a passable flat roof is the position of the final layer of waterproofing, which in the case of an inverted/passable flat roof is below the layer of thermal insulation. The layers of the inverted flat roof are as follows:

• AB plate with slope
• waterproofing
• thermal insulation
• diffusion open layer
• gravel on which concrete slabs are placed.

In the case of passable flat roofs, it is necessary to install a final protective layer such as cooler plates, decking, etc.

DRACO GARD 500 liquid rubber

Hydrophobic polyurethane coating, so-called liquid rubber DRACO GARD 500 meets all the requirements set by the waterproofing of the passable working roof, which can have ceramics for the final layer. To ensure adequate adhesion of the coating to the substrate without the possibility of separation, the substrate is coated with a primer, such as DRACO PRIMO 850. As the roof surfaces are large, it is recommended to divide the surface into several smaller areas with sawn expansion joints. Sawn expansion joints are sealed with waterproofing tape, and the coating is reinforced with DRACO BAND 210 reinforcement canvas.

High rainfall and small slopes threaten to retain water on the roof, to ensure sufficient height polyurethane coating is performed with elevation along with the attics (parapets) of the roof.

With the DRACO GARD 500 base coat, it is possible to increase the mechanical resistance and elasticity by coating with the DRACO TOP 500 top coat.

Polyurethane can remain as a final layer, in case the project envisages a final coating with ceramic tiles, the top coating can be performed by sprinkling with quartz sand for better adhesion of ceramic tiles.

Penetration of water and moisture into the building

The impermeability of roofs made of metal, copper and aluminum sheets largely depends on the interconnections of their individual parts. It is at these joints that water and moisture penetrate most often, which then penetrates the building and causes great damage.
